Scope, WBS and Change Control

Scope, WBS and Change Control

Project scope is the foundation, around which additional planning activities are defined and performed. With no clear scope definition and articulation of deliverables, any subsequent planning activities (i.e. resources, time, cost, risks) may be unrealistic as they will be based on incomplete or unclear information.

While scope is typically not considered as the most important planning foundation, its central role as a building block as the transition from the product to the project work – requires attention, care, skills and techniques.

This 2-day interactive session provides participants with the necessary knowledge and techniques to manage this often overlooked area – project scope – and to develop an effective WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) for use throughout the project lifecycle. The course also provides useful techniques to manage change in the project, to control scope and to enable the re-use certain aspects of the WBS in future projects.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will gain practical skills to:

  • Explain the importance of effective scope planning and management
  • Describe the need for a project WBS
  • Build a WBS and obtain practical experience in developing and using WBS
  • Explore guidelines and principles that help build a realistic WBS
  • Determine the appropriate level of decomposition and detail required for the WBS
  • Explore techniques for controlling scope and managing change in the project
  • Review the integrative role of the WBS with all knowledge areas and throughout the project lifecycle
